However, it was not only works of art that arrived from Italy, which were collected and esteemed by the aristocracy, clergy, and the court, but also artists who arrived in Vienna for periods of time, sometimes remaining there for their entire lives, and imprinting an epochal turning point in the local artistic production. Thus, it is not only a matter of material transfer but also of knowledge, know-how, and techniques spreading north of the Alps. |

Das Buch analysiert die Bedeutung der italienischen Kunst und Künstler in Wien vom 16. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert. Ausgehend von archivalischen Quellen und unveröffentlichtem Material werden in allen Beiträgen des Buches mehrere Fallbeispiele vorgestellt, die in ihrer Komplexität und Vielfalt die grundlegende Rolle der italienischen Kunst in Wien und in den habsburgischen Herrschaftsgebieten deutlich machen. Es waren jedoch nicht nur Kunstwerke, die aus Italien eintrafen und von Adel, Klerus und Hof gesammelt und geschätzt wurden, sondern auch Künstler, die für einige Zeit nach Wien kamen, manchmal ihr ganzes Leben dort verbrachten und einen epochalen Wendepunkt in der hiesigen Kunstproduktion einleiteten.
